Mosaic Gallery
From 2001 until 2008, the Museum of History and Holocaust Education (MHHE) played host to the Holocaust Museum Houston's butterfly project, and effort to memorialize the 1.5 million children killed during the Holocaust. Butterflies created by visitors to the MHHE were put on display in the gallery space adjacent to the entrance to the MHHE's signature exhibit, Parallel Journeys, and an excerpt from Pavel Friedman's famous poem, "The Butterfly" was included on the gallery wall.
After the original Butterfly Project came to an end, visitors to the MHHE continued to produce memorial butterflies which were added to this gallery's display. In addition, the MHHE kicked off its first Summer Workshop in 2008. During the workshop, students worked with mosaic artist Joel Landsburg to produce mosaic plates, tiles, and other art pieces as works of reflective commemoratiion, the culmination of their Summer Workshop educational experience.
